Our 2020 Goals: Working Today for a More Sustainable Tomorrow
Updated: Nov 3, 2018
In celebration of Earth Day, Athleta President and CEO, Nancy Green, shares the sustainability goals her brand has set out to achieve by 2020.
As athletes and active women, we know the importance of setting goals in order to break through.
At the beginning of the year we shared our commitment to sustainability and you may have noticed we are sharing more information on environmentally conscious products and sustainable practices. These moves reflect a fundamental belief at Athleta that we have a responsibility to protect our playground; to positively contribute to the direction of the apparel industry; to offer our customers more responsible options and drive demand for sustainable goods; and to support the limitless potential of women and girls.
So, in honor of Earth Day, we are sharing four pillars of our commitment to sustainability and the goals we’ve set to achieve by 2020 – which isn’t too far away. Our Commitment: Protect Resources
By 2020, 80% of our materials will be made with sustainable fibers. Athleta has been working to aggressively increase its use of sustainable materials over the last two years by converting materials to recycled synthetics, organic cotton, and using more efficient fabric dyeing and finishing techniques. These more sustainable fibers are transformed into high quality, high performance fabrics in many of Athleta’s signature styles. The brand will meet its new 2020 goal through a focus on partnering with fiber and manufacturing suppliers on innovative solutions. For example, by converting our Pacifica tops to recycled fabric, we are adding to the growing number of our recycled programs that have diverted 14 million plastic bottles from landfills. Our Commitment: Conserve Water
By 2020, 25% of our line will be made using techniques that save water. To achieve this we will invest in innovative new technologies and expand programs that use less water. For instance, our Repetition Tank and Tee get their color from a dye process that saves 4.5 gallons of water per garment, compared to traditional dyeing.
Our Commitment: Empower Women
By 2020, Athleta will impact 10,000 women and their communities through programs like P.A.C.E. and Fair Trade, which provide tangible opportunities for the predominantly female garment workers creating Athleta apparel. Our Commitment: Reduce Waste and Energy Usage
The more we work to protect our planet, the more work we realize there is to do.
One area where we are looking to improve our practices is in reducing waste and energy usage. We join our sister brands in a company-wide goal to divert 80% of waste and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% at all stores and headquarters by 2020. Additionally, we have begun shifting our catalog to FSC-certified paper and using 10% post-consumer waste recycled paper.
While we have charted a realistic path, it also includes some leaps of faith that we will be able to solve for complexities such as supply chain management, developing new fabrics which deliver the quality and design our customer expects, and investing in new technologies. But I have never seen such steadfast dedication to protecting the planet and empowering women and girls as I see from our teams at Athleta. It is that commitment – from those who are creating our product, and partnering with vendors and organizations – that give me the confidence that together we will achieve our goals. This is a team effort and we hope you will join us on this in these powerful steps to make a difference for our planet and its people.
