What are 5 Innovative Ways to Commit to Corporate Sustainability Without Money?

For a number of businesses, the commitment to sustainability can seem financially daunting. However, there are a number of ways to commit to sustainability without even touching the bank account.

1. Switch supplier

Some organisations think sustainable products cost more - this is not necessarily the case! By switching to a sustainable supplier of a comparable price, you will not only be ensuring your profit margin is untouched, you will also be making a commitment to sustainability through your supply chain.

2. Add a new line of product

We recognise that some sustainable products do in fact cost more if they are sourced from an ethical supply chain, especially if workers are being paid at a fair wage. We recognise that if you are paying a higher cost for supplies, you will either need to increase your price or decrease your profit margin. Instead of doing either or these and affecting your bottom line, you can trial a new line of sustainable product in your business. It can even be a "limited edition" line which can be monitored and reported back on before making the decision to add this line permanently to your brand. This can be sold at an increased price as studies have shown consumers are willing to pay 6% for products and services from companies which have a sustainability commitment and / or program in place.

3. Organise staff volunteering

Pick a couple of weekends a year when your company commits to a day of volunteering. It is important to have your staff on board with your commitment to sustainability to ensure a great turn out. Volunteer days could include community training for vulnerable people or an environmental clean-up day.

4. Ensure your staff are supported

This commitment to social sustainability will most likely improve your bottom line. By ensuring your staff are supported in their family lives by having a family-friendly workplace, you will be making a positive contribution to their mental health. Healthier staff are more productive staff, so it is a win-win for your team and organisation!

5. Offer some office space

If you have a spare desk or two in your office, why not contact a local not-for-profit organisation which may be in need of a little bit of workspace to ensure they can hold meetings? This also allows for a collaboration opportunity between your business and this not-for-profit on campaigns around sustainability, whether it be economic, social or environmental.

There are so many more ways that you can commit to sustainability without making a financial commitment. If you are interested in the best way to approach this in your business, contact a member of our team today!
